Over the weekend, NCNS staff, together with staff from the RSPCA, and Coreen Avenue Vet, provided a Community Pet Day in Cranebrook for community members who live within the Penrith City Council area. The day was a huge success; families got the chance to have their pets microchipped for free, as well free health check-ups to make sure their fury friends were happy and healthy.
Check out some of the adorable furry friends from the day below:
As well as a great chance for community to look after their pets, these community pet days are also invaluable opportunities for student volunteers to learn and gain experience.
In a recent article, ‘Student Volunteers @ RSPCA – Community Pet Vaccination Days’, Emily, a student volunteer, described the community pet days as an ‘excellent experience that had so many positive outcomes: healthier pets, more informed owners, and of course the opportunity to watch, learn and even contribute to professional practice in action.’
Thank you to the RSPCA and Coreen Avenue Vet for making this day possible!
Why is it important to microchip my pet?
Microchipping is compulsory in New South Wales.
A microchip is a small method of electronic identification (about the size of a grain of rice) that is implanted into the back of your pet’s neck. Each chip has a unique number that can be used to identify ownership of a pet using a microchip scanner. The contact information is keep on a microchip database.
If your pet gets lost, vets, animal shelters and councils can scan your pet and contact you, meaning there is a higher chance of your pet being returned to you if you make sure it is microchipped.
It is important to make sure your contact details remain up to date.
To do so you can go to www.petaddress.com.au
Does microchipping hurt?
Microchipping can cause a small amount of discomfort; however it is a safe and quick procedure that will quickly be forgotten by your pet.
