Cultural Safe Spaces: A Look Into Music Therapy

One of Nepean Communities most important creative programs is Music Therapy.

Music Therapy is an opportunity for aboriginal children to engage with Musical content and learning through live music, focussing on their social and developmental skills.

Carolyn Gilbert, who is based out of Nepean Community’s Development team thinks the program has several benefits for those involved.

“The program lets us engage with families we already have relationship with” Gilbert said, “Music Therapy lets us relate to them in a new way.”

“One of the most important parts of the program is providing a culturally safe space. This allows the children to be in a safe place and interact with other preschool aged children.”

“Our goal is to remove any financial restraints for those who would like to participate in the program. We are lucky to have secured funding for this program, allowing families who may not have been able to afford a class like this without it being provided through NCNS.”

To allow for cultural spaces to be accessed, Nepean community runs the Music Therapy program with transport available to those who are enrolled.

The future is bright for Music Therapy, with the hopes of the music content aligning with the cultural sensitivity of the space.
